Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)

Temporary anchorage devices — or TADs — are small titanium anchors that Dr. Bettagere places in the jawbone to help guide specific tooth movements with greater precision and efficiency. TADs allow Dr. Bettagere to achieve results that would otherwise require headgear or even surgery — making them a powerful and patient-friendly tool in certain complex orthodontic cases. They are used only when needed for your specific treatment plan, and are removed simply and comfortably once their job is done.

How Are TADs Placed?

  1. A local anaesthetic is applied to completely numb the gum tissue and jaw around the placement area. You will feel pressure during the procedure — but not pain.
  2. Once the area is numb, Dr. Bettagere gently places the small titanium anchor through the gum tissue and into the jawbone. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is typically over before patients expect it.
  3. You may feel slight pressure during placement — this is completely normal. Within 24 hours, most patients can no longer feel the TAD at all.
  4. While your TAD is in place, it works continuously to guide your tooth movement. You will adjust to it quickly.
  5. Removal of the TAD is a quick, comfortable procedure that takes just a few minutes — and is simpler than placement.

Managing Discomfort After TAD Placement

If you experience any discomfort after TAD placement, over-the-counter pain relief such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) is usually all that is needed. Most patients find any soreness resolves within one to two days. If discomfort persists beyond 48 hours or feels unusually severe, please contact our Anderson or Fortville office right away — we want to make sure your recovery is smooth and comfortable.

How to Keep Your TAD Clean

Keep your TAD clean by brushing your teeth thoroughly at least three times a day, paying close attention to the tissue around the anchor. When your TAD is placed, we will also provide you with an antimicrobial mouthwash to use twice daily to keep the surrounding area healthy.
